Trends come and go. When I published Versus: Darcy vs. Elizabeth, illustrated covers were on trend for romance. I had a sunny yellow cover with two silhouetted figures armed with rapiers, one male, one female, staring at each other. A set of playing card suits below the title hinted the story centered around games.
However, it didn’t herald that this was a Regency story. And the figures with swords might easily be misconstrued as engaging in real battles, not contests of wills. Besides, the pendulum has swung back the other direction as far as cover trends.
I began searching for a historical painting that conveyed a sense of competition between two lovebirds who were not ready to admit to love. Or, a picture that captures the moment when they cannot escape their feelings and must declare their love. I discovered a delightful print by a Czech painter, Alexander Jakesch, titled “Old History,” that fitted the bill perfectly.
While there are no alphabet tiles in front of them, Darcy contemplates Elizabeth, as she attempts to control her emotions as they play their final challenge. It captures the spirit of the book perfectly.
