My brother raved one family get-together about a show on Prime featuring a man on a narrowboat. I had a writer friend who had experienced one, so was intrigued and watched the show. The concept of such a vacation blends the old and new. The English canals were built over two hundred years ago but were quickly surpassed when steam locomotives made railroads easier and more efficient transportation.

But what if I set a modern story on a narrowboat? Or part of one? And a murder mystery? This seed grew into the plot for my next Pride and Prejudice variation. Lizzy Bennet co-owns Bennet Boats with her older sister, Leah Bennet. A rich technology guru by the name of Christopher Bingley rents one of her boats for a quick vacation to distract him from a huge announcement about his company’s new product. He cajoles his friend, Fitzwilliam Darcy, to come along, and for Lizzy to pilot so Christopher can relax.
The confines of the narrowboat allow for tempers to arise and not everyone can handle the tension. Some leave, others step away for breaks. But one particular Sunday, most people vanish for a time. And on Sunday, death appears.
